Art Gallery/Education UPSTAIRS [ARTSPACE] A non-profit contemporary art gallery specializing in two-dimensional art, sculpture and fine craft by emerging and established artists from the Southeast. Three interior galleries provide more than 3000-sq. feet of exhibition space and feature innovative shows that change every two months. Saluda Our pond will be stocked for 2007: there isn’t anything in it right now but turtles! However, there is plenty of fishing close by. If you contact Curtis Wright Outfitters; (Saluda’s very own outdoors supply/guide service) they can tell you all about where to find excellent local fishing. The phone number is 828-749-3444, ask for Carlton or Chad. Also, you can visit ncwildlife.org to view the hunting and fishing maps for all of the NC game lands.
Forest/Outdoors BRADLEY FALLS The trail to Big Bradley Falls is part of an unmarked, untended section of the Green River Game Lands - a rugged tract of land owned by the state for hunting and fishing. Hike at your own risk - the trail is primitive and requires crossing the stream. Proper hiking shoes required. The trail is especially dangerous at the top of the falls. Do not attempt to hike to the bottom. **Warning** Numerous deaths have occurred here due to falling from the narrow, rocky, trail. Exit 59 off I-26 on Holbert's Cove Road (away from downtown Saluda). Go 3.4 miles to bottom of gorge. Watch for unpaved parking area on left, just before you cross the stream. The unmarked trail starts at the orange gate.

DuPont State Forest The forest encompasses 10,268 acres in Henderson and Transylvania counties. It is situated in the Little River valley and includes waterfalls and 80 miles of roads and trails wandering through mountainous terrain. The forest is open to the public for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Fishing is allowed with a valid NC fishing license. Hunting is by special permit only, issued by a permit agent of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. The North Carolina Division of Forest Resources manages the forest. Forest/Outdoors Chimney Rock Park Chimney Rock Park is a natural attraction covering 1000 acres. On a clear day the view spans as far as Kings Mountain, seventy-five miles to the east. You can take the elevator 26 stories inside the mountain to reach the top of the Chimney and the trails. Chimney Rock Park hosts special events throughout the year, including an Easter sunrise service, an Earth Day celebration, demonstrations, and guided nature walks. Chimney Rock Park is located 14 miles east of Hendersonville.

Smoky Mtn National Park The Great Smoky Mountains National Park covers seven counties in North Carolina, with the northern fringe of the Smokies in Tennessee. Historic Site Carl Sandburg Home Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site Carl Sandburg, American poet, historian, author, and lecturer spent the final 22 years of his long and productive life at his estate, Connemara, in Flat Rock, NC. Today this National Historic Site offers a keen insight on Mr. Sandburg, his family and their 264 acre working farm. The Sandburg Home was built in 1838 and now houses his collection of 10,000 books, notes and papers. The home offers daily tours and is closed only on Christmas Day. Historic Site Cradle of Forestry Cradle of Forestry is a 6,500 acre Historic Site within the Pisgah National Forest, set aside by Congress to commemorate the beginning of forestry conservation in the United States. The Forest Discovery Center commemorates conservation history with an 18 minute movie on Vanderbilt, Pinchot, Schenck and the beginning of forestry in America. Outdoor activities include two guided trails which lead you back in time to seven historical buildings, a 1915 Climax locomotive and the old sawmill. Historic Site Historic Johnson Farm Historic Johnson Farm is a fine example of a late 19th and early 20th century farm & tourist retreat. The entire structure was handmade from bricks that were fired on site from French Broad River mud. The Johnson Farm was the home of a wealthy tobacco farmer, Oliver Moss. Construction of the elegant home, smokehouse, and granary began in 1876 and was completed in 1880. Over the years many outbuildings were constructed, including a tool shed/blacksmith shop, barn, boarding house, and a cottage. Tours are offered Tuesday-Friday at 10:30am and 11:30am. Historic Site St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church, listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, offers a unique perspective of prominent families in southern and national history. St. John in the Wilderness was built as a private chapel in 1833, on the grounds of Charles and Susan Barings' home, Mountain Lodge. The church was deeded to the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina in 1936.

Many well-known members of southern aristocracy have family plots in the churchyard; those names include: Christopher Memminger, first secretary of the Confederate treasury; Rev. John Drayton, developer of the world-famous Magnolia Gardens of Charleston; members of the families of three signers of the Declaration of Independence; Edward P. Historic Site Thomas Wolfe's Angel Author Thomas Wolfe’s first novel was Look Homeward, Angel. In the book there are constant references to an angel statue carved from Italian marble. This is the angel Wolfe placed in American literature. Thomas Wolfe’s father, W.O. Wolfe, sold the statue to the Johnson family to mark the family plot in Oakdale Cemetery. The angel is holding a lily in her left hand and extending her right hand upward. Oakdale Cemetery is located on Hwy. 64 W., just a short distance from downtown Hendersonville. The statue is protected by a wrought iron fence, and there is a historical marker located on the highway.
Historic Site Thomas Wolfe Memorial The Thomas Wolfe Memorial is the childhood home of author, Thomas Wolfe. Thomas Wolfe immortalized his childhood home in his epic autobiographical novel, Look Homeward, Angel. Wolfe's colorful portrayal of his family, his hometown of Asheville, North Carolina, and the Old Kentucky Home boarding house earned the historic Victorian home a place as one of American Literature's most famous landmarks. Historic Site Zebulon Baird Vance Birthplace The Birthplace of Zebulon Baird Vance is located in Weaverville, NC. Vance's political career as a Civil War officer, governor of North Carolina, and U.S. senator is explored at the homestead.

Zeb Vance served in public office for thirty years, in the North Carolina House of Commons and the United States House of Representatives and was elected the governor three times.

The furnishings and household items on display are representative of the period from 1790 to 1840 and include a few pieces original to the home. Museum Biltmore House Biltmore House today is the largest privately owned home in America situated on 8,000 acres. It was built by George Vanderbilt and was completed in 1895. Vanderbilt commissioned Richard Morris Hunt to create the 250-room mansion modeled after a French chateau. Today the Estate encompasses the house, gardens, restaurants, gift shops, inn and winery. Museum Historic Train Depot The first steam engine puffed up the Saluda Grade to the Hendersonville Depot in 1879. The steam engine needed a “help engine” attached to the rear of the train at Melrose for additional power to push the train up the Saluda Mountain Grade, the steepest main-line standard gauge railroad in the United States. The Carolina Special ran between Charleston, South Carolina and Cincinnati, Ohio from 1911 until 1968.

Today the exterior paint has been restored to its original color. A Southern Railway caboose is located at the south end. The depot's baggage room houses the Apple Valley Model Railroad Club and their HO scale model railroad. The layout is prototypical of Hendersonville, Asheville, Brevard and Saluda, including the Saluda Grade. The depot is open year round, Wednesday 12Noon-2:00PM, Saturday 10:00AM-2:00PM. Museum HOUSE OF FLAGS On display are more than 300 flags that have flown over this country since its founding. This educational and historical display includes a 20-minute video and a guide for a fee. Schools can make arrangements to bring students for a 20-minute to an hour presentation. Scenic Drive/Overlook PACOLET RIVER SCENIC BYWAY Drive along this scenic 10-mile byway that follows the Pacolet River from Tryon to historic Saluda. View waterfalls, wildflowers, and beautiful vistas. Take US 176 North from Tryon or South from Saluda.
Scenic Drive/Overlook Polk County Scenic Drive For scenery, take Houston Road out of Columbus (stay right at fork), turn left onto White Oak Mountain Road and drive to the top, passing Shunkawauken Falls. Continue on the gravel road to Sunset Rock with its expansive views. Spend a few minutes and snap a photo, then head back the way you came.

Take Silver Creek Road out of Mill Spring and loop, going up either Holbert's Cove Road or Green River Cove Road, and then down the other. It's a nice rural ride with both river and mountain vistas.

SHUNKAWAUKEN FALLS A tall waterfall near the top of White Oak Mountain. The road cuts through the falls and is narrow with minimal pull-outs. Be very careful, if you decide to stop. White Oak Mountain Road Columbus, NC.
Scenic Drive/Overlook Jump Off Rock Jump Off Rock is a scenic overlook which provides a panoramic view of rolling pastures, the Blue Ridge and Pisgah mountain ranges. Jump Off Rock also holds an Indian legend that has been passed down for many, many years. Over 300 years ago a young Cherokee Indian maiden received word that her young Indian Chief had been killed in battle, so she climbed to the edge of the rock and jumped off. Indian legend has it that on moonlit nights you can see the ghost of the maiden on Jump Off Rock. Jump Off is located about 5 miles from downtown at the end of Laurel Park Hwy in Hendersonville. The park is open daily, sunrise to sunset. No admission charge.
